National Network of Incubators and Accelerators

Last update of the initiative: 17/06/2022

A network that connects and enables more than 150 Portuguese incubators and accelerators across the country, acting as a decisive factor in the success rate of innovative ideas and startups.

What is it?

The National Network of Incubators identifies, maps and connects the incubators and accelerators operating in Portugal, created by universities, science and technology parks, local authorities, private companies or foreign entities. Its role is to promote cooperation and the sharing of resources and knowledge within the network, improving the quality of resources and services made available to entrepreneurs and incubated companies.

Incubators and accelerators support startups in developing their ideas and businesses by providing mentoring, strategic guidance, training, R&D, partnerships, networking and access to funding. For startups at an early stage, access to incubation can be a key success factor.

What is the difference between an Incubator and an Accelerator?

Depending on a startup’s stage of development, it should seek support from an incubator, an accelerator or other support programmes.

Incubators

Public or private organisations that provide structured or customised support over a relatively long period, aimed at startups at an early stage.

The national network of Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH) also provides incubation services. Learn more here.

Accelerators

Public or private organisations that offer an intensive, structured and short-term programme designed to drive rapid startup growth.

Support programmes

These include several types of initiatives to support entrepreneurship. They may be short-term programmes (typically lasting from two days to one week), offering strategic support and including competitions, bootcamps, events, seminars and workshops. They may also include public incentives and policy measures to foster entrepreneurship.
