Girls in STEM

What it is

An operational instrument of the Portugal Digital Strategy (PDS) constituting a public policy measure aimed at an inclusive digital transition. It seeks to fulfil national and international commitments in the areas of gender equality, digital skills and sustainable development, through interventions across the entire educational and training pathway. In this regard, it covers the education, higher education and labour market sectors, reinforcing the Portuguese State's commitment to full, active and inclusive participation in the digital age.

What it promotes

The National Girls in STEM Programme promotes the attraction, retention and progression of girls and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, addressing their persistent under-representation in these fields — a result of gender stereotypes, educational segregation and barriers to professional advancement — with direct impacts on equal opportunities, economic competitiveness and the country's capacity for innovation.
