In Detail
The European Commission has launched a public consultation on its draft guidelines for classifying high-risk artificial intelligence systems under the European Artificial Intelligence Act, also known as the AI Act.
The consultation is open to citizens, businesses, public administrations, academic institutions and civil society organizations. Contributions can be submitted via the official questionnaire made available by the European Commission until 23 June 2026 at 22:00 CET.
The now-available guidelines set out the Commission’s interpretation of concepts relevant for classification purposes. In accordance with Article 6(5) of the AI Act, they include practical examples of AI systems that should or should not be classified as high-risk. These examples cover a range of areas and use cases, but are not exhaustive and may be updated over time. An interactive version of the guidelines is also available on the AI Act Single Information Platform, enabling users to quickly access summaries, examples, and a thematic explorer of use cases.
Participation in this public consultation will enable the Commission to gather further input prior to adopting the final version of the guidelines, which is currently expected in September 2026 once the ongoing internal procedures have been completed.
Interested parties can contribute via the official form at: https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/AIhighrisks_2026.
