In Detail

Registrations are now open for the Digital Accessibility Challenge – Higher Education, an initiative promoted by Agency for the Technological Reform of the State (Agência para a Reforma Tecnológica do Estado, ARTE), which aims to support Portuguese higher education institutions in making their digital services more accessible and inclusive.

The challenge will take place from 17 to 26 March 2026, in a 100% online format, and aims to equip the technical teams of universities and polytechnics to obtain the Accessibility Statement for their websites, in compliance with the legal requirements set out in Decree-Law No. 83/2018.

Aimed at IT directors, technicians, developers, designers, content editors and website or mobile application managers, the Digital Accessibility Challenge combines training content, practical examples and support tools that enable participants to identify and correct accessibility barriers in digital services.

Over the course of eight working days, participants will have access to materials released progressively on an online platform and will be able to learn at their own pace. The programme also includes specialised technical support from ARTE’s accessibility team, ensuring guidance throughout the entire process.

At the end of the challenge, teams that complete the planned activities will be prepared to publish their website Accessibility Statement, helping to ensure that institutional digital services are accessible to all users, including people with disabilities.

The initiative is free of charge, but places are limited, encouraging institutions to secure their teams’ participation in advance and to take another step towards promoting an inclusive digital ecosystem in higher education.
