In Detail
On 27 March, Portugal assumed the presidency of the D9+, an informal group that brings together European Union Member States recognised as leaders in the field of digital transition. The ceremony took place in Amsterdam during the D9+ Ministerial Summit, with the participation of Margarida Balseiro Lopes, Minister for Youth and Modernisation.
This is the first time Portugal has held the presidency of the D9+, reflecting the country’s growing commitment to promoting digitalisation and administrative, economic, and social modernisation within the European space. The group was established in 2016 at the initiative of then Swedish Minister Ann Linde and currently brings together 13 EU Member States, with Portugal joining in October 2020.
During the summit, participating countries endorsed the D9+ Ministerial Declaration, which highlights the urgency of stepping up private investment in Europe’s digital economy. The document also recognises the key role of digitalisation in strengthening the competitiveness, strategic autonomy, and economic resilience of the European Union.
Portugal’s presidency of the D9+ is a strategic opportunity to assert the national vision in digital policy, while reinforcing the country’s contribution towards a more innovative, competitive, and future-ready Europe.
