In Detail
On April 20, 2026, the Lisbon School of Economics and Management, in Lisbon, will host the event “Girls in STEM”, as part of the week of celebrations for the International Girls in ICT Day. The session will take place from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM and aims to strengthen the discussion around gender equality in technological and scientific fields.
The event will feature a presentation on the current status of the National Girls in STEM Programme, approved by the Portuguese Government in October 2025 under Council of Ministers Resolution No. 175/2025. As part of the Portugal Digital Strategy for 2030, the programme seeks to promote the attraction, retention, and advancement of girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
The importance of the initiative is highlighted by recent Eurostat data, showing that only one in four ICT specialists is a woman, and that women represent just 35% of STEM graduates.
During the session, the “Girls in STEM” Emblem will also be presented - an award recognizing projects by public, private, academic, and civil society organizations that actively promote gender equality in these fields.
The programme is structured around three main pillars:
- Education, from pre-school to secondary education (12th grade);
- Higher education, focusing on continuity and specialization;
- A cross-cutting axis, including the creation of a network of ambassadors and mentors - women with outstanding career paths who inspire and support younger generations.
