Biography
He has been a Full Professor at Católica-Lisbon School of Business & Economics of the Portuguese Catholic University, holding the Chair in Social Innovation, since December 2016.
He has served as Dean of CATÓLICA-LISBON since February 2019.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the New University of Lisbon (1994), where he graduated among the top 2% of students.
He obtained a Master’s degree in Management and Industrial Strategy from ISEG-UTL in 1996, receiving the IAPMEI Award for Best Student of the Year.
He was an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico between 1996 and 1998, where he served as an executive member of the Pedagogical Council and Coordinator of the Office for Studies and Planning.
He earned a PhD in Management Science & Engineering from Stanford University in 2003. He obtained the Habilitation (Agregação) in Management from the Portuguese Catholic University in 2016. He was Professor of Entrepreneurship at INSEAD in France between 2003 and 2014, where he remains a Visiting Professor.
In the public sector, he was the founder and first President, from January 2015 to November 2016, of the Portugal Social Innovation Mission Structure (EMPIS), a public initiative created under Portugal 2020 to foster social innovation and social entrepreneurship.
In September 2019, he received the global Social Innovation Thought Leader Award from the Schwab Foundation, one of the organisations of the World Economic Forum, and was included in Clarivate’s list of the world’s most highly cited researchers.
He seeks to contribute to the development of an economic system aligned with the generation of well-being and prosperity, based on the entrepreneurial energy of citizens who pursue purpose and generate social impact, as well as on the design of effective public policies and modern public services.
